La Société Guernesiaise, Grant, 2023

Thanks to a generous donation, La Société Guernesiaise, able to continue with the annual grant scheme.

The grant is a single payment of £2,000 and is intended to support;

  1. a student who is studying or researching a subject related to biodiversity and conservation of the natural environment, or;
  2. a citizen scientist. Citizen scientists typically are not professional scientists. Instead they are people who collaborate with professional scientists in ways that advance scientific research on topics they care about. For example, County Recorders can be professional scientists or citizen scientists.

Who is eligible to apply for the grant?

Any person who:

(a) is ordinarily resident in the Bailiwick of Guernsey at the commencement of 2023 for citizen scientists or for the 2022-2023 academic year in respect of student applicants;

and either;

(b) is attending, or will be attending in the autumn term 2023, a course of higher education in biological, ecological, or environmental science, or a course which contains a substantial element of such science;

or; and;

(d) is a member of La Société Guernesiaise. Citizen scientists must be full members. Student membership of the organisation costs £5 per annum, and may be purchased on La Société’s website: www.societe.org.gg.

Applications may be made in respect of both undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

For candidates wishing to undertake on-island research, the Guernsey Biological Records Centre can offer office space, advice, and support.

(c) is undertaking or wishes to undertake research on Guernsey’s fauna, flora, ecology, or other discipline supported by La Société;

In the unlikely event that no suitable candidates are found in any given year, the grant will be carried forward to the following year.
