Education

La Société created its education team in September 2020 thanks to funding from the Guernsey Community Foundation.

The focus is the delivery of an Environmental Education programme through the school curriculum which is linked to the Strategy for Nature (https://www.gov.gg/strategyfornature).

It is important our education programme is inclusive and accessible providing opportunities to all children and young adults in so much as our resources allow and enable.

In addition to working with the education curriculum we aim to work with and support youth groups and clubs to engage young people’s interest in Guernsey’s heritage and foster a sense of stewardship.

We have revived the La Société junior membership and will be providing monthly activities, which proved popular in the past.

We also intend introducing week-long learning clubs during school holidays. This will be open to non-members where resources permit.

At a time when connectedness to nature is more important than ever, we believe every child should have the opportunity to fall in love with nature.  Our aim is to make La Société accessible to everyone!

Becky Ogier

I’m Becky Ogier – I was born and educated here in Guernsey, attending the Vale School and Ladies’ College. I joined La Societe Guernesiaise in September 2020 as Education and Conservation Leader, delivering environmental activities to children in order to promote a love for Guernsey and its wildlife.

Prior to this role I ran my own local business before becoming Family Club Manager at Island Mums, and also provided tuition for many children in a variety of subjects.  I spent several years home-educating and along with a small group of other parents set up Living Education Guernsey before co-founding the home education charity COGS Guernsey.

I am married to Scott and have three daughters – we’re an ‘outdoorsy’ family and enjoy camping, boating, foraging and walking our dog, and in my spare time I love swimming, reading and live music.

I count myself very lucky to be able to combine my two greatest enthusiasms, education and the environment, as the first holder of this post.

Sarah Allez

My name is Sarah Allez and I have recently been appointed as Education Conservation Assistant with La Société Guernesiaise.

I have grown up appreciating nature and connecting with the environment on our lovely island. In my spare time I enjoy yoga, reading, sea swimming, walking and spending time with my family.

I have always had a great interest in the history and nature of Guernsey and after attending Guernsey Grammar School I undertook a BA degree in History at the University of Exeter, based at their Falmouth campus in Cornwall. Studying in Falmouth only excelled my love of nature as I studied Anthropogenic Climate Change and the Politics of Nature as modules of my degree.

Both education and the environment are important to me for so many reasons. I’m looking forward to sharing what La Société has to offer with the public and children of Guernsey helping to create a world in which humans can live in harmony with the natural world.
