SUMMARY:La Société Members - Conservation Volunteer Event - Nature Reserve Work
DESCRIPTION:La Société Members – Conservation Volunteer Event- Practical Work on our Nature Reserves –  Hemlock Water-dropwort Removal  🌱\nThursday 1st May | 10:00am – 12:00pm\, Bridget Ozanne Orchid Fields at Les Vicheries. \nWe invite our Conservation Volunteers (any La Société member!) to join us to help us remove Hemlock Water-dropwort from our Orchid Fields.  \nThis network of 15 meadows has been managed by traditional methods for many years; no artificial fertilisers\, herbicides or pesticides have been used\, very little cultivation has taken place and the fields have not been ploughed since WWII. As a result\, they have maintained their original flora and are very colourful in spring\, when paths are cut around the fields so that visitors can take a closer look at the wild orchids.  That’s where we and our volunteers come in\, cutting the hemlock water dropwort which encroaches onto the meadows\, ensuring that the meadows remain clear whilst continuing to use traditional methods of land management.  \n\nMeeting location is here – https://maps.app.goo.gl/gDAPxdWWcuteUnaU8\n\n  \n\nParking – There is a car park alongside the sea wall on Route de Rocquaine – here – https://maps.app.goo.gl/6CW9VPDqTtRZ4x6k7  as well as several spaces for car parking beside bunkers along the coast road in the sand/grassy areas – here – https://maps.app.goo.gl/689nq8BLDFHRgjpaA or here – https://maps.app.goo.gl/j7nb8HHKXRbR1CibA\, and from there it’s a short walk inland to the orchid fields at Les Vicheries.\n\n  \n\nClothing: Please wear practical appropriate clothing you don’t mind potentially getting dirty and sturdy shoes. If you have a pair of gardening gloves and appropriate tools (i.e. loppers\, secateurs etc) please bring them along\, if not some will be provided. \n\n—————

SUMMARY:Marine Protected Areas across the UK\, an evening with Blue Marine Foundation
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 14th May  7:30pm \nFrossard Lecture Theatre\, Candie \nHear from Freddie Watson and Dr Jean-Luc Solandt of the Blue Marine Foundation as they share stories on the progress and lessons-learnt of Marine Protected Areas across the UK and Channel Islands. \nAbout this event \nThis event will feature two presentations from Jean Luc Solandt and Freddie Watson of the Blue Marine Foundation. \nJean-Luc will talk about the amazing habitats and stories from UK MPAs – why we need to protect our seas\, the increased urgency in the face of climate change\, and how the conversation and perspective of ‘protection’ has changed over the past 2 generations. What does this evolution mean for the Channel Islands\, and how we – as a society – are facing the greatest challenge to mankind. \nFreddie will then dive into the various initiatives and workstreams which initially brought the topic of MPAs to the policy table in Jersey. These activities played a key role in securing the words ‘develop a network of marine protected areas’ within Jersey’s Island Plan. This then kickstarted the marine spatial plan\, and therefore\, the development of MPAs. Freddie will touch on key research projects\, education initiatives and supporting low-impact fisheries\, as well as what the next steps look like for Jersey. \nBook Tickets here
