Le Grande Pré is a nature reserve on the island which is owned by the States of Guernsey\, but has long been managed by La Société. The reserve is one of the largest surviving areas of wetland and reed beds we have\, and therefore is an important habitat for an array of local wildlife\, but in particular breeding birds.  \nBird ringing helps provide us with a better understanding of the populations and distribution of our local birds. Meeting at the Motocross (Scramble) Track Carpark.  \nJoin us for a morning bird walk as we look out for migratory birds passing over the island. Our islands come into their own during migration season\, when many birds stop off en route to rest and there is always the chance of bumping into a long-distant vagrant or rarity. September and October are probably the peak months for interesting migrants and one may see good numbers of warblers\, finches\, thrushes\, waders\, seabirds or birds of prey depending on the conditions. \nWe will provide a spotter sheet and try to tick off as many birds as we can on our walk!  \nTo register interest in this event\, please contact Sarah at eca@societe.org.gg with children’s names. \nPlease wear sensible footwear. Children will need to be supervised. We recommend that you bring a torch. \n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Monday August 14st – visit to La Societe’s Grand Pre and La Marette reserves looking for insects\, migrating birds and other flora and fauna. Later in the evening a moth trap will be set and we will see what comes into the light\, as well as looking out for bats and barn owls. Bring a picnic and join us at La Marette at 6.30pm or come along at 7pm and join the sweep netting session. \nThese events are open to members of La Societe. DESCRIPTION:Churches Study Day\, looking at the remaining three churches not already studied in this series: \nthe Vale\, St. Sampson’s and St. Saviour’s\, with a picnic lunch at St. Peter’s Valley. Please ensure \nthat you let the Secretary know in advance if you intend to take part. This will be an all-day \nevent. \nAll Winter\, Spring and Autumn meetings begin at 7.30p.m.\, on a Saturday evening\, and will be held at Candie Museum Lecture Theatre or in the adjoining Section Room. Talks will be by John McCormack\, unless stated otherwise. Summer meetings mostly take the form of visits and begin on site at 2.30p.m.. New members are always very welcome to attend\, but should contact John McCormack (tel. 720303; e-mail mrjam@cwgsy.net) beforehand in case of alterations or final instructions. Those attending regularly should ensure that they are already members of La Société.
