SUMMARY:CANCELLED - Junior Event – 'Search for the Plant Invaders' with Guernsey Conservation Volunteers 🌱
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 9th August | 14:00 – 15:00 | Rocquaine – **** CANCELLED***  \nWe invite our Juniors to join us for an event with Guernsey Conservation Volunteers (GCV) where we will be on the ‘Search for the Plant Invaders’! This will involve removing sour fig shoots (an invasive\, non-native plant!) from Rocquaine. \nGCV successfully completed their goal of 2024 which was to make Rocquaine “free of sour fig”\, and in 2025 they’re committed to keeping this the case! We’re looking forward to lending a helping hand\, so please join us and help to remove this invasive non-native plant which is damaging our island’s environment.  \nSour fig is an invasive non-native plant has a negative impact on our native species. When the plant is removed a variety of native coastal plants  will regrow from existing seeds in the ground\, which in turn will then provide food and shelter for insects and small mammals. This increase in biodiversity is so important to our island and helping our natural world recover. 🐝🌱🦋 \nLocation of event – Rocquaine – here \nParking location – here \nTo register interest in this event\, please email Sarah at eca@societe.org.gg with children’s names.  If you have your own gloves\, please bring them along. \n— \nAll junior events are free for La Société members. If you are not a member but are interested in this event\, please email Sarah at eca@societe.org.gg and you are welcome to come along as a taster session to our events and learn more about the benefits of becoming a member.  To become a member\, please follow the below link.

SUMMARY:Junior Event – Crab Surveying 🦀
DESCRIPTION:Junior Event – Crab Surveying 🦀\nSaturday 12th July | 14:00 – 15:30\, at Portelet Bay \nCome along and help us survey our local crabs! Crabs are a really good marker of our coastal environment and crab surveying helps us assess the status and health of our local crabs\, population changes of native and non-native species\, and also helps us to monitor human impact on marine life. Crabs are easily impacted by human activities\, including warming seas\, the introduction of invasive species and overexploitation. This makes them an ideal subject to help indicate how oceans are changing and the impacts of these threats. \nAll data collected with be given to the Guernsey Biological Records Centre and become a part of our local records.  \nTo register interest in this event\, please contact Sarah at eca@societe.org.gg with children’s names. \nWe will meet at the bottom of the slipway on the beach.  Please wear sensible footwear and we look forward to seeing you there! \nLocation – What3words: ///commitments.encases.bullseye – here \n___ \nAll junior events are free for La Société members. SUMMARY:Marine Protected Areas across the UK\, an evening with Blue Marine Foundation
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 14th May  7:30pm \nFrossard Lecture Theatre\, Candie \nHear from Freddie Watson and Dr Jean-Luc Solandt of the Blue Marine Foundation as they share stories on the progress and lessons-learnt of Marine Protected Areas across the UK and Channel Islands. \nAbout this event \nThis event will feature two presentations from Jean Luc Solandt and Freddie Watson of the Blue Marine Foundation. \nJean-Luc will talk about the amazing habitats and stories from UK MPAs – why we need to protect our seas\, the increased urgency in the face of climate change\, and how the conversation and perspective of ‘protection’ has changed over the past 2 generations. What does this evolution mean for the Channel Islands\, and how we – as a society – are facing the greatest challenge to mankind. \nFreddie will then dive into the various initiatives and workstreams which initially brought the topic of MPAs to the policy table in Jersey. These activities played a key role in securing the words ‘develop a network of marine protected areas’ within Jersey’s Island Plan. This then kickstarted the marine spatial plan\, and therefore\, the development of MPAs. Freddie will touch on key research projects\, education initiatives and supporting low-impact fisheries\, as well as what the next steps look like for Jersey. \nBook Tickets here

SUMMARY:La Société Members - Conservation Volunteer Event - Nature Reserve Work
DESCRIPTION:La Société Members – Conservation Volunteer Event- Practical Work on our Nature Reserves –  Hemlock Water-dropwort Removal  🌱\nThursday 1st May | 10:00am – 12:00pm\, Bridget Ozanne Orchid Fields at Les Vicheries. \nWe invite our Conservation Volunteers (any La Société member!) to join us to help us remove Hemlock Water-dropwort from our Orchid Fields.  \nThis network of 15 meadows has been managed by traditional methods for many years; no artificial fertilisers\, herbicides or pesticides have been used\, very little cultivation has taken place and the fields have not been ploughed since WWII. As a result\, they have maintained their original flora and are very colourful in spring\, when paths are cut around the fields so that visitors can take a closer look at the wild orchids.  That’s where we and our volunteers come in\, cutting the hemlock water dropwort which encroaches onto the meadows\, ensuring that the meadows remain clear whilst continuing to use traditional methods of land management.  \n\nMeeting location is here – https://maps.app.goo.gl/gDAPxdWWcuteUnaU8\n\n  \n\nParking – There is a car park alongside the sea wall on Route de Rocquaine – here – https://maps.app.goo.gl/6CW9VPDqTtRZ4x6k7  as well as several spaces for car parking beside bunkers along the coast road in the sand/grassy areas – here – https://maps.app.goo.gl/689nq8BLDFHRgjpaA or here – https://maps.app.goo.gl/j7nb8HHKXRbR1CibA\, and from there it’s a short walk inland to the orchid fields at Les Vicheries.\n\n  \n\nClothing: Please wear practical appropriate clothing you don’t mind potentially getting dirty and sturdy shoes. If you have a pair of gardening gloves and appropriate tools (i.e. loppers\, secateurs etc) please bring them along\, if not some will be provided. \n\n—————
