Junior Event – Bird Ringing Demonstration

Sunday 19th July | 9:00am – 10:00am, at Le Grande Pré Nature Reserve.

Would you like to see wild birds up close? Join us for a morning of bird ringing demonstrated by Trevor Bourgaize at Le Grande Pré Nature Reserve.

Bird ringing helps provide us with a better understanding of the populations and distribution of our local birds. Guernsey has bird ringing records which date back to the mid 1940s which supplies us with a wealth of information.

Please note, this event will be weather dependent.

Please wear sensible footwear.

Our annual Nature Guernsey Family Day will take place this year in July on Sunday 26th July Pleinmont Headland. 

Whether your family is interested in flowers, birds, moths, bugs or bats, loves our environment and enjoys craft activities, this is the place to be. 

Nature Guernsey events are free and open to all. Donations are always welcome.

8:30am – 9:00am – Moth Trap Emptying  

9:00am – 10:00am – Guided Bird Walk 

10:00am – 11:00am – Children’s Bug Hunt 

Weather dependent and to be confirmed nearer to the time – 11:00am – 11:45am – Guided Botany Walk 

Ongoing activities throughout the morning: – Bird Ringing Demonstrations, – Moths on display, – Dolphin Watch & Surveying, Solar Astronomy – Bat Board Display – learn about our local species, – Zoology Hedgehog  Tunnel demonstration

Children’s Activities: – Native seed planting – Leaf/Nature texture rubbing  – Create a nature collage – Colouring

Junior Event – Crab Surveying

Thursday 13th August | 13:15 – 14:30 at Portelet Bay

Come along and help us survey our local crabs! Crabs are a really good marker of our coastal environment and crab surveying helps us assess the status and health of our local crabs, population changes of native and non-native species, and also helps us to monitor human impact on marine life. Crabs are easily impacted by human activities, including warming seas, the introduction of invasive species and overexploitation. This makes them an ideal subject to help indicate how oceans are changing and the impacts of these threats.

All data collected with be given to the Guernsey Biological Records Centre and become a part of our local records.

We will meet at the bottom of the slipway on the beach.  Please wear sensible footwear and bring a bucket if you have one. We look forward to seeing you there!

Historic Building Lectures from March-April and October-December will begin at 7.30pm and will be held at Guernsey Museum in the Frossard Theatre. Visits from May-September will take place on site and will begin at 2:30pm unless otherwise stated.
