SUMMARY:La Société Members - Volunteer Event - Beach Clean
DESCRIPTION:La Société Members – Volunteer Event – Coastal Clean up & Beach Clean at Cobo Bay (after the Balcony gig) 🌊\nMonday 13th July | 11:00am – 12:30\, Cobo Bay.  \nWe invite our members to join us for a coastal clean up and beach clean! We’ve scheduled this event for after the Cobo Balcony gig to make sure our coastal areas stay clean and no harmful trace is left on our beaches.  \nThe vast majority of marine litter collected in our local beach cleans is plastic. Marine wildlife comes face-to-face with our plastic habit every day and it’s destroying our seas and the wonderful wildlife living there. Help us to clean up our beaches and stop rubbish polluting our ocean by joining us at this event. \nWe will meet in carpark by Mims Kiosk here – location meeting point \nPlease wear sensible footwear and if you have some\, bring a pair of gloves (some will be provided if you don’t have any). We look forward to seeing you there! \n—————

SUMMARY:EVE TORODE PRESENTS ON HER MSC RESEARCH IN GUERNSEY
DESCRIPTION:In partial fulfilment of my MSc I set out to undertake the first ecological assessment of sea bed communities and food web dynamics in Guernsey waters. Using mono-Baited Remote Underwater Video systems (mono-BRUVs)\, I investigated how varying levels of fishing pressure affect community composition across sites with low\, moderate\, and high fishing intensity. The findings contribute to a foundational ecological baseline vital for sustainable fisheries management and marine conservation in the Channel Islands. \n  \n18th Nov Marine biology talk

SUMMARY:Marine Protected Areas across the UK\, an evening with Blue Marine Foundation
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 14th May  7:30pm \nFrossard Lecture Theatre\, Candie \nHear from Freddie Watson and Dr Jean-Luc Solandt of the Blue Marine Foundation as they share stories on the progress and lessons-learnt of Marine Protected Areas across the UK and Channel Islands. \nAbout this event \nThis event will feature two presentations from Jean Luc Solandt and Freddie Watson of the Blue Marine Foundation. \nJean-Luc will talk about the amazing habitats and stories from UK MPAs – why we need to protect our seas\, the increased urgency in the face of climate change\, and how the conversation and perspective of ‘protection’ has changed over the past 2 generations. What does this evolution mean for the Channel Islands\, and how we – as a society – are facing the greatest challenge to mankind. \nFreddie will then dive into the various initiatives and workstreams which initially brought the topic of MPAs to the policy table in Jersey. These activities played a key role in securing the words ‘develop a network of marine protected areas’ within Jersey’s Island Plan. This then kickstarted the marine spatial plan\, and therefore\, the development of MPAs. Freddie will touch on key research projects\, education initiatives and supporting low-impact fisheries\, as well as what the next steps look like for Jersey. \nBook Tickets here
