SUMMARY:Junior Event – Crab Surveying 🦀
DESCRIPTION:Junior Event – Crab Surveying 🦀\nThursday 13th August | 13:15 – 14:30 at Portelet Bay \nCome along and help us survey our local crabs! Crabs are a really good marker of our coastal environment and crab surveying helps us assess the status and health of our local crabs\, population changes of native and non-native species\, and also helps us to monitor human impact on marine life. Crabs are easily impacted by human activities\, including warming seas\, the introduction of invasive species and overexploitation. This makes them an ideal subject to help indicate how oceans are changing and the impacts of these threats. \nAll data collected with be given to the Guernsey Biological Records Centre and become a part of our local records.  \nTo register interest in this event\, please contact Sarah at eca@societe.org.gg with children’s names. \nWe will meet at the bottom of the slipway on the beach.  Please wear sensible footwear and bring a bucket if you have one. We look forward to seeing you there! \nLocation – What3words: ///commitments.encases.bullseye – here \n___ \nAll junior events are free for La Société members. If you are not a member but are interested in this event\, please email Sarah at eca@societe.org.gg and you are welcome to come along as a taster session to our events and learn more about the benefits of becoming a member.  To become a member\, please follow the below link.

SUMMARY:"The Fate of Kelp and Why It Matters for Carbon in the Ocean” a talk by Pip Gallagher
DESCRIPTION:“The Fate of Kelp and Why It Matters for Carbon in the Ocean” a talk by Pip Gallagher \nFriday 21st August 2026\, 5.30 pm \nTickets available on Eventbrite: \nRESERVE TICKETS HERE \n“Kelps are renowned for their ability to sequestrate atmospheric carbon\, akin to rainforests on land. But\, what is the fate of kelp once broken away from its forest?  \n  \nMy dissertation project investigated how the decay of golden kelp is affected by varying environmental factors\, and how small epiphytes living on its tissues affect its degradation rate. This talk will explore how the rate of kelp decay in the sea can dictate the fate of the carbon that it has stored\, and what this may mean in the context of quantifying blue carbon. It will also highlight the importance of protecting our kelp forests\, not just for biodiversity preservation\, but also for economic resilience.” \nTickets are free for members of La Société Guernesiaise\, non-members are welcome to make a donation.  However\, should you choose to join now\, your membership will run through until the end of 2027…16-17 months. \nJoin here:  JOIN HERE \n
