SUMMARY:Junior Event – 'Searching for the Plant Invaders' with Guernsey Conservation Volunteers
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 20th July | 14:00 – 15:00 | Rocquaine  \nWe would like to invite our Juniors to join us for a joint event with Guernsey Conservation Volunteers (GCV) where we will be ‘Searching for the Plant Invaders’ by removing sour fig shoots (a non-native plant!) from Rocquaine. \nGCV’s aim this year is to make Rocquaine “free of sour fig by the end of the year” and we’re looking forward to lending a helping hand! Come along and help us remove this invasive non-native plant which is damaging our island’s environment.  \nSour fig is an invasive non-native plant has a negative impact on our native species. When the plant is removed a variety of native coastal plants  will regrow from existing seeds in the ground\, which in turn will then provide food and shelter for insects and small mammals. DESCRIPTION:Junior Event – Migratory Bird Walk\nFriday 1st September | 9:30am – 10:45am\, at Pleinmont. Meeting at the Motocross (Scramble) Track Carpark.  \nJoin us for a morning bird walk as we look out for migratory birds passing over the island. Our islands come into their own during migration season\, when many birds stop off en route to rest and there is always the chance of bumping into a long-distant vagrant or rarity. September and October are probably the peak months for interesting migrants and one may see good numbers of warblers\, finches\, thrushes\, waders\, seabirds or birds of prey depending on the conditions. \nWe will provide a spotter sheet and try to tick off as many birds as we can on our walk!  \nTo register interest in this event\, please contact Sarah at eca@societe.org.gg with children’s names. \nPlease wear sensible footwear. Crabs are a really good marker of our coastal environment and crab surveying helps us assess the status and health of our local crabs\, population changes of native and non-native species\, and also helps us to monitor human impact on marine life. Crabs are easily impacted by human activities\, including warming seas\, the introduction of invasive species and overexploitation. This makes them an ideal subject to help indicate how oceans are changing and the impacts of these threats.
