About La Société

MEMBERSHIP
Membership is open to all individuals, companies and schools. It is divided into 11 different sections, each with a specific interest, and members may additionally join any of these sections, so long as they are currently a member of the main organisation. There may be a small charge to cover newsletters etc. Please refer to the section webpages here for a detailed list of each section’s activities.
If you are interested in the the aims of La Société and Bailiwick of Guernsey  please join. Apart from financial support, La Société needs broad support in pursuing its aims from as wide a spectrum of supporters as possible. All members receive regular newsletters and the annual Transactions to keep them in touch and you will certainly be made most welcome at any meetings, lectures etc, or by individual Sections.

PUBLICATIONS
La Société produces three newsletters each year and publishes the Transactions of La Société Guernesiaise annually. This includes the report from council, the accounts and reports from the sections as well as a variety of papers on subjects of local interest. La Société also publishes books and other associated publications which are of local interest.

MEETINGS & LECTURES
As well as meetings organised by individual sections, La Société organises open lectures as well as visits to places of interest in the Bailiwick and to Normandy and Brittany.

ACTIVITIES
La Société fulfils a valuable role by providing advice to States of Guernsey Departments and answers questions about the Bailiwick from individuals and institutions worldwide.
La Société also runs the Guernsey Biological Records Centre which was founded in January 2003. It is a partnership between the States of Guernsey, Environment Department and La Société Guernesiaise through its environmental consultancy company Guernsey Environmental Services Ltd. It holds biological data primarily for the Bailiwick of Guernsey, but with some from the Bailiwick of Jersey, the Chausey Islands and the adjacent French coast. NATURE RESERVES
La Société Guernesiaise now owns or leases some 50 separate areas of land, totalling some 320 vergées (130 acres) and owns or manages the majority of the nature reserves on the island. These include the four major reed beds on the island, and some superb orchid fields, which are considered to be some of the best in the British Isles. In addition, La Société manages large areas of land for the States of Guernsey.

HEADQUARTERS
The Headquarters of La Société Guernesiaise is located in a wing at the Guernsey Museum and Art Gallery, in the beautiful Victorian Candie Gardens in St Peter Port. The wing was constructed by La Société in 1986 to commemorate its centenary and was completely refurbished in 2002 as the Frossard Centre. It comprises a 70-seat lecture theatre, which is shared with the Museum, a “Section Room” for use by Sections of La Société, and an office and library. The theatre is fully equipped, with data, slide and overhead projection, 10-foot motorised screen, PA system, etc.

The office is normally open between 10.00 and 11.30 am on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
