Ozanne Nature Reserve
This large field in the north of the island was kindly donated to La Société in 2004 by the Ozanne family of the Castel in memory of Percy & Freda Ozanne. In the past (and presently) it has been grazed by cattle, but little else has been done to it. In the winter pictures it appears to be very rough semi-improved grassland, but in Spring it bursts into life, and is full of Orchids, Meadow Buttercups and Sorrel. Whilst not as rich as some of our other Orchid Fields, four species of orchid are present, and the Spotted Orchids in some areas (generally to the North of the field) are in such thick dense stands, that you cannot walk between them! A fantastic sight in late May.
The Reserve is somewhat hidden away, but go off the L'Ancresse Road at La Greve in the south, and a track appears in front of you before the road turns sharp right into Rue du Closel. The field is at the end of this track jsut past a garden shed and usually a laid-up boat. Please do not enter if cows are grazing. The electric fence may be live at other times.
There is a douit (artificial stream) at the eastern end of the field, where it is lowest, so this is the wettest part of the field. Sallows also overhang the meadow along this boundary, and the farmer who grazes the field cuts these back from time to time. Beyond the douit lie other tracts of wet and marshy land, making this an important area in terms of nature conservation.
